Traditionally, groynes (artificial promontories built to inhibit erosion by disrupting the currents which wash away the island) have been quite crude functional affairs, but in recent years resorts have been turning eye sores to sights for sore eyes with an array of décor and uses. Four Seasons Kuda Huraa’s pool featured in Instagrammer Miss Angie Villa’s post is so similar to one in design, that I think it sets the blueprint for someone converting a proper groyne into this design.
Best of the Maldives: Kids Greeting Treat – Four Seasons Kuda Huraa
Every arrival at a resort typically includes some special welcome treat. Anything from a fruit basket to gourmet delicacies, a bottle of wine to useful gifts or a ready-to-go cocktail. At Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, the younger set get just as colourfully and creatively constructed welcomes as the parents complete with custom chocolate name plate. Mind you, it might take hours of swimming to burn off the sugar rush!
Best of the Maldives: Glass Sided Pool – Four Seasons Kuda Huraa
You can have your very own personal glass sided pool at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa with its Sunset Two Bedroom Water Suite. As much as I applaud its uniqueness, I must confess I question its usefulness. You can’t look out the glass sides. That is, unless you are doing some snorkelling in the pool. Snorkelling in the Maldives might be the best in the world, but I’m not sure that the pools are really included. And as far as looking in from the other side, I’m even less sure. One of the biggest perks of a private pool (so I hear) is being able to skinny dip. And one of the most requested characteristics of the resorts is privacy. I think a glass-sided pool might just be the least private pool.
Best of the Maldives: Children Surfing– Four Seasons Kuda Huraa
Probably the two most unsung appeals to the Maldives – children and surfing.
A number of the items from my last recent “Haven’t Seen” came from a Sunday Times Travel feature “Tantrums and tasting menus: meet the minigarchs” (eg. swim with a mermaid, 8-course child’s tasting menu). Before I even had a chance to include “surfing for kids” in the latest list, Four Seasons Kuda Huraa announces its own mini-Malibu offering…
“The Maldives has a reputation for mirror-calm waters, but is also home to some thrilling surf. Little Keanus can sign up for lessons at the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, where even if they prove rubbish at it, they won’t miss out on the ride. Instructors will paddle out with the child on the front of their board and, as a big one breaks, pick them up and hold them in surfing stance so they can ride the wave back to shore.”
Going off for gidgets and dude-inos.
Best of the Maldives Online: Maldives Lifestyle Blogger – Samyoyo & Belinda’s Travel (Belinda Young)
One of the things that struck me in my recent fashion research is the prevalence of the Lifestyle (Fashion and Travel) bloggers. Of the 220+ subjects I discovered, 57 fall into this category. All of these share a few key things in common – (a) they are female (I have yet to find a male Fashion/Travel blog with a Maldives post), and (b) they are all attractive (bit of a cross-correlation between their being kind to fashion and fashion being kind to them).
They also tend to come to the Maldives once to tick that bucket list destination off the list and then jet off to some other corner of the world. One big exception struck me – Belinda Young.
Belinda and her sister Samyoyo have visited 14 different Maldives resorts (and One & Only Reethi Rah twice). Belinda explores a range of tropical resorts all over the world, but she keeps coming back to the Maldives.
Furthermore, her resort pedigree is truly top class…
- Maalifushi by COMO (2015)
- Cocoa Island by COMO (2015)
- Cheval Blanc Randheli (2014)
- Jumeirah Dhevanafushiu (2011/09)
- Six Senses Laamu (2011)
- Conrad Rangali Island (2009)
- Shangri-La’s Villingili (2009)
- Banyan Tree Madivaru (2007)
- Naladhu (2007)
- Soneva Gili (2005)
- One&Only Reethi Rah (2005, 2nd visit)
- One&Only Reethi Rah (2005)
- Dhoni Mighili (2005)
- Four Seasons Kuda Huraa (2004)
- Huvafen Fushi (2004)
Most of the Maldives veterans on Trip Advisor Forum have tended to frequent the upper mid-market properties. Visits to the emerging 5+ star super-premium segment (like Belinda’s list) are quite rare. And the glamorati who do go to such places, tend not to share much of their travels (though that is changing with Tweeting and now Instagramming becoming a popular activity for celebrities even on their get-away-from-it-all breaks).
I came across Belinda’s travel/fashion blog researching the Maldives fashion database. She has posted an extensive range of photos that both provide alluring snapshots of the resorts, but also feature her in many striking poses. I got in touch with her to get permission to use some of the photos and also to enquire a bit about her Maldive expeditions. She promptly responded with a warm and helpful reply. After a few email exchanges, she gladly agreed to do an exclusive interview for Maldives Complete sharing some of her perspectives (she also provided both English and Chinese versions of the interview).
· What is your favourite photo of yourself in the Maldives?
The photo in Banyan Tree Madivaru [see top]. I wore my customized dress inspired the colors of Maldives. Not enough words to describe, but you know what I mean…
· Which resort most exceeded your expectations?
In our memories, One&Only Reethi Rah is the number one. But the tiny, peaceful and romantic Cocoa exceeded our expectation. It’s hard to forget the nature beauty of Cocoa Island. You must be curious why Reethi is the No. 1? I wanna to say is all about the friends…old friends and new friends made our stay really One&Only!
· What was the most romantic touch that a resort added to your stay? ?
The sunset cocktail party at Fanditha restaurant in One&Only Reethi Rah. I think the major reason was that we had just been invited to join a sunset beach wedding before the party. Although I am not the bride, I could feel the joy and happiness. The moment was so precious and special.
· You travel all around the world…what do you find different about the Maldives as a tropical destination?
We just like to travel tropical islands. The beautiful nature and isolation make the Maldives very unique destination. I love doing nothing just staring at the sea all day and feeling the time standing still…
· What is your pet peeve at Maldives resorts?
Well….I think….OH! Too difficult to answer. But back to summer of 2005, we experienced an incredible stay at Dhoni Mighili. Look at the island right now? I think I have no right to judge Safari island Resort, but can’t go back anymore! I hope the same situation never happens on Banyan Tree Madivaru.
· Reethi Rah appears to be only resort (Maldives or other places) where you returned…why did you visit there twice? O&O Reethi Rah Rah
Not only the One&Only Reethi Rah, we have been The Brando in Tahiti and Song Saa Private Island twice too. For Reethi I think there are 2 reasons. First, we went to O&O Reethi the first time, it had only opened for 2 weeks, and there were lots of small issues not so perfect as we expected. We got transfer problems on the way back to Male, so the management team invited us return and experience. Secondly, we are going to publish our travel book “Islands Chic” (introduce Maldives/Tahiti/Hawaii), we returned for more photos for the book.
· The Maldives is renowned for the best snorkeling in the world, but you have seen some many tropical islands around the world. Which other tropical island comes closest to the Maldives for snorkeling quality? ?
I have to tell you….we don’t know how to swim…and…even a little bit of afraid the water (especially the rogue wave). So it’s shame that we didn’t really enjoy snorkeling…crazy right? But we have been to Palau long long time ago…we did snorkeling in there and enjoy it. I think the snorkeling is very good.
· What have you not seen in the Maldives that you would love to see or you think some resort should feature (maybe you saw it at a tropical resort in another part of the world)?
How about the special way to delivery your breakfast to villa likes Canoe Breakfast in Tahiti. But I hope it had a little different from Tahiti…it have to be in Maldives way! But I have no any idea right now.
· Do you have any favourite foods or drinks you like to have specifically in the Maldives? ?
Local food: chapatti (with Maldivian chili), we ate chapatti almost every morning when we were there.
· Which is the next Maldives resort you want to visit?
But for the future resort i think it is Soneva Jani. I love the concept of SONEVA.. Soneva Fushi not yet! This is only Soneva we didn’t go to yet. I am still interested in Soneva in Aqua…but don’t know when will it open!
· Which resort is the one you would most like to return to?
Cheval Blanc Randheli is the resort that I would want to return to. I was the one of the first grand opening guests of Cheval Blanc. Unfortunately, they had lots of issues I had encountered during my stay (I don’t want to mention), but the most important thing was that I didn’t travel with my elder sister Samantha (we always travel together), so I want to experience it again with my dearest.
Cheval Blanc Randheli!
· Do you have any favourite “shots” you like to get (my wife and I always get a photo of us in front of the resort sign)?
The bottle of water with resort logo (I love the resort logo on the bottle…not all the resorts have it!)
· Any tips to offer first time visitors to the Maldives?
Bare foot anywhere as you can…you will miss the sand in your toes when you back to city.
Best of the Maldives: Above Water Protected Area – Four Seasons Kuda Huraa
QI Question of the Day: “In what type of landscape is the Huraa Marine Protected Area found?”
A: The ocean?
QI: <BUZZ> No, the Huraa MPA is a mangrove swamp found o the Huraa island in the North Male atoll.
Think all “Marine Protected Areas” (MPAs) are under water?
Well, one of the MPAs are actually only semi-aquatic. The “Huraa” MPA is actually a mangrove island…
“Huraa Mangrove Nature Reserve (HMNR) has been designated a Protected Area, in recognition of the fact that it is an important natural mangrove habitat which contains species of particular conservation significance to the Maldives and the rest of the world. A human community also live on Huraa Island who is itself affected by the existence of the Nature Reserve, and whose day-to-day life and activities in turn impact on the mangrove ecosystem.”
Four Seasons Kuda Huraa is its namesake neighbour and plays an active role in supporting is preservation.
Best of the Maldives: Sunglass Cleaning – Four Seasons Kuda Huraa
International Workers Day today is a chance to celebrate the sterling work that the Maldives resort staff provide every day of the year. They do every thing from keep us safe on snorkel trips to making sure that every whim is catered for.
One of my favourite all time roles is Four Seasons Kuda Huraa “sunglasses cleaner” which we saw when we visited there (but didn’t get a picture). He even has a name a perfect as his role…“Dr. Shade”
“Mohamed Shareef, 28, has been working at the Four Seasons for almost seven years… I start work by 1:30 p.m., and I walk around and repair and clean guest sunglasses. Most people love to see Dr. Shade. I wear a stethoscope and a white coat. I have some tools. Mostly I just clean the glasses, but I can fix them if I need to.”

Best of the Maldives: Live Aboard Combo – Four Seasons Kuda Huraa / Landaa Giraavaru
Maldives Complete also doesn’t do boats in its profiles or ‘Best of’ reviews. I’ve shied away from getting into the whole ‘Live Aboard’ segment of Maldives holidays because, like Guest Houses, I’ve never been on one so I wouldn’t know which criteria to feature or how to write about it.
But, this post’s distinction is sort of a resort/cruise hybrid so it just passes. It’s sort of the ultimate water villa. A mobile water villa.
We have always fantasized about taking a cruise boat actually as a way to see lots of nooks and crannies of this mystical archipelago. Having been to many resorts and enjoying the discovery of new gems, the notion of touring along a stopping at all sorts of little islands off the beaten path and then retiring to the ultimate in ‘water villas’ sounded entrancing.
We can see the appeal of such a floating holiday…
- If you ever wanted to try out the mega-yacht life for the experience of your very own (ever see those gigantic yachts parked in swish harbours with ports of call on their bow for ‘C.I.’ and ‘V.I.’ and wonder what staying on them would be like?).
- If you’ve ever thought of going beyond even the picnic island excursions of resorts to the most secluded and far flung hidden parts of the Maldives strung together like your own customised ‘virtual’ resort.
- If you are thinking of an extended (time and budget) holiday over say two weeks and definitely want to split into two resorts
Well, any of these have crossed your mind, then the Four Seasons has an offer for you with their Four Seasons combo offer on the exquisite Four Seasons Explorer offers a brilliant option.
- 22 guests
- 39 meters
- 1 suite
- 10 state rooms
- Wi-fi (this surprised me…I thought I would have to forfeit my digital connection for the tour)
- Underwater videography
- Kayak, snorkel, water-ski
- Spa therapist on board
Another possible title for this post is “Billionaire for a Week”. Like my “Billionaire for a Day” post. The price of chartering the Four Seasons Explorer is $16,000 per day (last I checked) for whole yacht. For 22 people that’s a bit over £500 per day which isn’t exactly billionaire price bracket. But it certainly is the billionaire lifestyle.
Pol-ypdate
They grow up so fast.
The Four Seasons have always had a website that allowed you to look up your Reefscaper coral frame and see how it was progressing, but now they have just relaunched a special website, Marine Savers, to provide not only frame update lookups, but also detailed information and updates on the ever broading range of their Maldives-leading conservation initiatives.
Above is our frame (KH0327) we planted in November 2010 at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa. Toddler-sized growths are looking pretty attractive compared to the collection of broken pieces that we affixed to the iron frame. Curiously, our frame (LG0729) planted during our visit to Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru that same week is doing notably less well, but still clear healthy growth from the fragments first affixed.
Best of the Maldives: Aquarium Pool – Four Seasons Kuda Huraa
Perhaps the most tragic natural disaster of the decade, the Boxing Day Tsunami, happened eponymously today. While hitting the hardest in its South Pacific epicentre, its titanic power travelled thousands of miles to the Maldives who suffered fatalities and much loss (which on a per capita basis was actually one of the hardest hit countries in its path).
One of the resorts hit hardest was Four Seasons Kuda Huraa (in fact, a work colleague was a guest on the island that day) so today’s post features on of their distinctions. In fact, it features something more Maldivian-like and completely un-tsunami-like.
A tsunami is so antithetical to the mill pond like stillness of the typical Maldivian seas. Swimming in the Maldives is like swimming in an aquarium. And, at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa you can actually ‘swim in an aquarium’ of sorts as well in its glass walled private pool (see above). However, it is only stocked with with the aquatic species Guestus Bikinius.
