Maldives Tour 2014 – Day 10: Anantara Kihavah Villas

Anantara Kihavah tour

Mary Poppins of Maldives resorts. ‘Practically perfect in every way.’ That’s Anantara Kihavah.

There are very few resorts that tick as many boxes as Kihavah does. Some islands are great, and some resorts are great. Finding great islands with great resorts on them is by definition rarer.

The crème de la crème resorts tick a number of key boxes for service, food, styling, etc., but the “Super Premiums” (aka “5+ Stars”) take all of the criteria a step further. Not only that, but they also have one special, added requirement – the “wow” item. The “wow” is not just an abstract effect of quality and style, but it is a very tangible thing that is the first thing you brag about when you get home. In the Maldives, the most common “wow” is an underwater feature, but it can be something like a marine discovery centre or some other distinctive experience.

The Kihavah “wow” is its underwater ”Sea” restaurant. In many respects, it surpasses the iconic one at Conrad. Conrad’s Ithaa restaurant is in the lagoon, while Kihavah’s Sea is perched on the precipice of its house reef drop-off. And what a drop off it is. Plunging straight down for 30 meters into the deep blue abyss. Novice snorkelers, unconfident swimmers, and of course land-lubbers don’t usually get to experience the aquatic thrill of the reef drop off, but Kihavah’s dining portal give it a drop-off everyone can experience.

And that’s where the crème de la crème islands star. With a vibrant and easily accessible house reefs. Kihavah has a particularly fine house reef which you enter straight from the jetties. In addition to its reef, I was quite fond of Kihavah’s modest size. I like the smaller islands that have an intimate and isolated feel to them. But the frosting the cake was Kihavah’s dazzling circumambient beach. One broad, soft, white strip of sand that encircles the entire island. As my wife regularly reminds me, such beauty is not without effort and Kihavah takes considerable effort to groom and primp. But instead of beach defenses (like unsightly groynes and seawalls), instead Kihavah lets nature take its course and then each year they rebuild the section of the beach (typically by the pool) which gets eroded.

Kihavah scores more “outstanding” marks in more areas than all but a few places I have visited in the Maldives. No surprise that I came away from my visit with 19 new “Best of the Maldives” candidates.

A must candidate for any Maldives connoisseur.

Best of the Maldives: Glass Bottomed Bath – Anantara Kihavah

Anantara Kihavah glass bottom bath tub

If you want to soak in your own bath of floral scents and colourful visuals, then Anantara Kihava’s glass bottomed bath extends right down into the ocean. You can be surrounded by vibrant petals floating above and vivid sea creatures scurrying about beneath.

Kihavah’s distinction has tipped that balance of “bath” features enough for me to now add a “Bath” sub-category to “Relaxing” in the Best of Maldives.

Glass bottomed soak.

Best of the Maldives: Coursing Courses – Anantara Kihava

Anantara Kihavah Villas - Sky Salt Fire Sea

Thai National Day today brings us to Anantara for inspiration. On special occasions, meals can be all the more elegant by actually taking place in different venues. A starter in the parlour, a main at a dining table, dessert in the lounge, afters on the deck.

It’s are to find a resort with an elevated deck for eating (though getting more common). Even more rare, obviously, are few exquisite underwater venues. Anantara Kihavah Villas offers boths of these and more in one unified, over-water, themed dining experience – ‘Sea. Fire. Salt. Sky’

“Guests at Anantara Kihavah Villas will be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining, with six restaurants and bars each offering a distinctive setting, menu and ambience. Highlighting the resort’s idyllic location in the dazzling Indian Ocean is the exclusive Sea. Fire. Salt. Sky. signature dining experience. This unique under and over water gastronomic concept features four remarkable venues, each offering a different type of cuisine that is as unique as the perspective. Ascend to the rooftop ‘Sky’ bar to sample Champagne and succulent cuisine presented on tempting skewers whilst taking in the awe-inspiring view of the Baa Atoll island archipelago. As a golden sunset unfolds an ambience of mellow music invites guests to unwind with exotic cocktails in the refreshing evening sea breeze. At ‘Fire’ diners’ visual and taste senses are astounded with dramatic Teppanyaki cooking displays as chefs prepare fresh local rock lobster, Wagyu beef or the catch of the day. ‘Salt’ offers unique depth and complexity of flavours as a Red Snapper infused with lemongrass, ginger and coarse black pepper is baked to perfection in front of diners on a Himalayan salt brick. Here a simple request to ‘pass the salt’ gets a new meaning as a Salt Sommelier helps diners to pair their food with the perfect seasoning.”

Best of the Maldives: Posh Coffee – Anantara Kihavah

Anantara Kihavah Black Ivory coffee

You think a Starbucks is overpriced? Try “Black Ivory”. It sells for $1,100 per kilogram.

Why so much? Well, it is from coffee beans that have been ingested, digested and egested by elephants. Each bean hand picked from the elephant’s ‘output’ (for all of those teenage barristas moaning about their crappy jobs…you have no idea. Talk about having to wake up and smell the coffee).

It has just been introduced to Anantara Kihavah (as well as Anantara’s other top resorts around the world). The offering suits Anantara’s Thai roots as this prized bean comes from elephants reserves in Thailand. ABC News reports

“According to the resort, Black Ivory coffee beans are “naturally refined” by Thai elephants. Research indicates that during digestion, the enzymes of the elephant break down coffee protein, according to the resort. Protein is one of the factors responsible for bitterness in coffee: less protein, less bitterness. The coffee is ground by hand and brewed table side in a four-minute process. The fragrance is said to be floral and chocolate and the taste ‘milk chocolate, nutty, earthy with hints of spice and red berries.’ Thai Arabica beans are picked from an altitude of 1500 meters (about 5000 feet) and fed to the elephants. ‘Once deposited by the elephants, the individual beans are handpicked by mahouts (elephant trainer and care giver) and their wives and sun dried.’”

Best of the Maldives: Olive Oil – Anantara Kihavah

“Somelier, what do you have with fragrant bouquet, golden colour and smooth texture.”

Nope, not a guest at the Bubble Lounge seeking a tip on some tipple, but rather at Anantara Kihavah olive oil emporium…

“Casual lunches of crisp salads and traditional pastas are served poolside.  In the evening the upstairs restaurant transforms into a leisurely Italian delice, offering regional specialties skilfully crafted from traditional ingredients.  And expect an Olive Oil Sommelier to explain a selection of olive oil samples with the kind of lexicon usually reserved for wine.”

Their ‘extra virgin’ selection includes…

  • Rustichella d'Abruzzo NOVELLO Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Italy
  • PONS Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Spain
  • Dandaragan Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Australia
  • Vallaurea Ardoino Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Italy
  • Coriole Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, South Australia
  • Ionis Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil (organic), Greece
  • Marmarabirlik Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Turkey
  • Terra Rossa Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Jordan
  • Colonna Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Italy
  • Naturbosco Arezzo Black Truffle Oil, Italy
  • TartuFlanghe Piedmont White Truffle Oil, Italy
  • Mongibello Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil (organic), Italy

And the perfect complement, as well as just as pricey as many bottles of champagne per bottle, gourmet balsamic vinegars…

  • La Vecchia Dispensa Balsamic Vinegar 10yr
  • Bellei Balsamic Vinegar of Modena 12yr
  • Champagne Vinegar
  • Cherry Vinegar
  • Percheron Cider Vinegar
  • Komesu Rice Vinegar
  • Raspberry Vinegar
  • Red and White Wine Vinegar

At Kihavah, even a simple salad for lunch is an occasion with style and distinction. Even dieting to keep that swimsuit figure doesn’t mean missing out on gourmet delicacy.

Best of the Maldives: Underwater Function Room – Anantara Kihavah Villas

Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin’ for?
Under the sea, Under the sea
Darling it’s better
Down where it’s wetter
Take it from me
The Little Mermaid

If you want your social functions immersed in water, then Anantara Kihavah are the latest to add an underwater spectacle to their resort.

The biggest of the underwater rooms in the Maldives extends it to more than a meal or treatment. It is being used for dining, dancing, functions like weddings (see picture below) and special events like wine tastings…

  • “View and savour the Indian Ocean’s abundance of marine life by descending into a connoisseur journey at the underwater restaurant and wine cellar, ‘Sea’, where guests are indulged with exquisite degustation menus or classic creations and tempted by the resident Wine Sommelier’s perfect accompaniments from a vast array of new and old world selections. Oenophiles will delight in the impressive underwater wine cellar, featuring one of the most balanced and diverse wine collections in the Maldives with over 6,500 bottles and 320 labels from 14 countries. 22 labels are available by the glass and regular tasting sessions offer guests a tantalising journey through the vineyards of the world.”

Sort of a new dimension to going ‘down below’ to see the wine cellar and literally taking special occasions to the next ‘level’.

Best of the Maldives: Honeymoon Registry – Anantara

Anantara Kihavah honeymoon registry

Tis indeed the season for taking the plunge. The nuptial plunge. Bridal magazines are cascading off the newsagent shelves, harried betrothed are scrambling for church bookings, and couples are getting vase.into their charming first rows over patterns for the bridal registry.

Why not avoid the latter most with gifts that everyone can agree on? That is, just about anything enjoyed in the Maldives.

Anantara (all of their Maldives properties – Kihavah, Veli, Dhigu) has introduced a ‘Honeymoon Registry’ with gifts like an ‘Upgrade to an Over-Water Pool Villa’ or a ‘Private Sand Bank Day Trip’.

When Lori and I tied the knot, we loved getting cash as gifts as we were so impoverished. Starting our lives and blowing so much on the event.  During our honeymoon, we tracked our special treats (eg. nice meals out, horse and buggy ride, trip to the amusement park) and what we spent on them.  Then, when we got back and dug into thank-you note writing, and we attributed the cash gifts to the treats we enjoyed. The generous gift givers seemed to really enjoy the fact that they contributed to something special rather than just topping up a bank account.

The registries are such a help to guests and loved ones who want to make a gift. You never know quite what to get especially in these days where many people do already have a lot of the basic household items. Not to mention that massage or beach dinner sounds much better to give than a toaster or vase.

Best of the Maldives: Underwater Holiday Decoration – Anantara Kihavah

Anantara Kihavah underwater Christmas tree

Wee fish you a ‘mer’ eco-ristmas!

An inspired underwater creation at Anantara Kihavah this holiday season…

“Is it a rock? Is it a tree? Is it an eco-friendly coral Christmas tree under the sea? Anantara Kihavah Villas in the Maldives’ UNESCO Marine Biosphere Baa Atoll region has taken its unique coral adoption initiative to new festive depths with the creation of an underwater Christmas tree made entirely from reef coral collected from the seabed. Diners at the exclusive island resort’s Sea Restaurant, one of the few underwater restaurants in the world, can view the Christmas tree display along with striped lionfish, moray eel and eagle rays while savouring the Indian Ocean’s abundance of marine life.”

I have had to adapt a version of the classic carol ‘Oh, Christmas Tree’ for this creation…

Eau Christmas Tree, Eau Christmas tree,
How lovely are your nudibranchs!
In beauty green and blue as one,
Through summer sun and winter sun.
Eau Christmas tree, Eau Christmas tree,
How lovely are your nudibranches!

Happy Holidays to everyone! Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All.
