Best of the Maldives: Towel Scuplture – Club Med Kani

I was inspired by the terry cloth creature above to take the plunge into the latest social mediaPinterest. Pinterest allows you to set up albums to share collections of photos. I’ve already featured room art a number of times including ‘Bed Decoration’ and ‘Bed Art’, but this particular piece (shared with permission from guest Vincent Benita) is by far the most elaborate and cheeky I have ever seen.

The piece made me realise that I regularly come across great examples of bed and room decorations and rather than constantly revising my ‘Best Of’ posts, it would be better to create an honour gallery where al my discoveries could be collected and showcased. I’m started with the following two ‘Boards’…

I was tempted to create a ‘Maldives Sunset’ Board since there are so many prize examples of those on the web, but I’m going to start with these first.

Best of the Maldives: Laughter – Club Med Kani

Club Med Kani shows

If you like a good laugh, then Club Med Kani is the top yuckster hang out in the Maldives. While tranquillity and quiet seem to the norm and aspiration for many Maldives resorts, I was struck by the truly boisterous energy (in the main areas…there are plenty of peaceful areas across the island) at Kani when I visited. Laughter in pool, in the games area, around the bar.

But the in the evenings, the resort undertakes its most ambitious humour with regular comedy shows. First of all, putting on comedy to a mulit-cultural crowd is a massive challenge. There is of course the language issue not mention the various cultural variations prevailing senses of humour. As a result, the entertainment does tend to devolve to the lowest common denominator of slapstick with liberal use of the language-independent mime. But beyond these fundamental challenges, I was stuck by the enthusiasm with which the guests embraced these shows. At many resorts, entertainment evenings are a tick-in-the-box distraction that draw a few semi-interested guests. But at Kani, the purpose-built the theatre area is regularly packed out with a lively audience.

LOL!

Best of the Maldives: Making Friends – Club Med Kani

Club Med Kani pool disco

Lest old acquaintances be forgot…” Happy New Year!

If making friends (or at least acquaintances) enhances your visit, then the place to go is Club Med Kani. Their whole ethos is invests a lot in running group activities which makes for highly conducive friend-making. Like the ‘pool disco’ in the photo above where there were a couple dozen folks of all ages bop to the lively dance leader (standing at pool’s edge on far right).

It’s not just the activities, but it is the guests themselves. Club Med’s atmosphere is so distinctly and characteristically lively and active, that their resorts around the world (not just the Maldives) attract a certain type of guest who does relish this energy and interaction. I often suggest Club Med Kani for two groups – families with kids (because they are most likely to meet and interact with others there age here) and singles. No place in the Maldives really caters for ‘singles’, and you’re not likely to meet another ‘single’ friend at Club Med Kani (not that many singles come to the Maldives), but at least you won’t be lonely at Club Med and you will make friends to share you holiday with.

It’s not just the guests, but the staff themselves are especially amiable. At many resorts, the staff will eat in their own quarters or off at some segregated dining table in the restaurant. But at Club Med Kani all the staff eat with the guests (as long as they are well and not intruding). It is a really nice personal touch.

Some people don’t want to meet with nor interact with anyone on their holiday. The Maldives can offer that remote isolation. It is one of the appeals to the celebrity set. But for the more social in nature, the jovial, relaxed atmosphere, and the shared experience of savouring paradise often brings people together on an island. Sharing a remarkable sight in the water or telling stories of discoveries during the day at the bar.

Privacy and time together alone is great, but sometimes you do welcome just a bit of human interaction. I gave my wife a trip on the Orient Express for an anniversary present years ago. As it happens you can either go London to Venice (and fly back) or the other direction. So many people like the idea of setting off from Waterloo Station that the option to go Venice-London (and fly to Venice) was about 30% cheaper. We just wanted the experience so it seemed to make sense to save the money. We fly to Venice a few days a ahead of time and then boarded the iconic steam train there. The things is that in Venice, most of what you do is walk around, sightsee, sit in cafes and restaurants. As a result, Lori and I were pretty well caught up on conversation. And after all that, we were boarding a vehicle for 32 straight hours in an enclosed space together. We loved the experience, but we both admit, we really looked forward to meal times. It was then that, in addition to the charm of dressing up in black tie, you were sat at a table with another couple of passengers. We really enjoyed (and even looked forward) to meeting some new people, sharing thoughts on the sumptuous experience, and interjecting a bit of variety into our conversation.

And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.” And a Happy Hogmany as well…

Best of the Maldives: Ingredient Theme – Club Med Kani

Happy Thanksgiving Pilgrims!

The spirit of the day is appreciation and gratitude (which must come relatively easy for anyone who finds themselves in the Maldives today), but the centrepiece of the American tradition is food. In particular, one main ingredient – turkey. Dubbed ‘Turkey Day’, meals for the next weeks revolves around various poultry combinations from the big bird…leftover turkey, turkey sandwiches, turkey curry, turkey soup, etc.

In this spirit, Club Med Kani has such a food theme every day! In stark contrast to a typical Thanksgiving feast, the focus is on healthy eating. When I visited, the theme was ‘Cucumber’ and the buffet featured…

  • Cucumber Spring Rolls (hand made a station)
  • Cucumber and Mango Kebab
  • Cucumber Oliver Tapanade
  • Cucumber Sushi with Fish Roe
  • Cucumber Salad with Vinegar and Honey
  • Cucumber Thai Salad
  • Cucumber and Smoker Fish Sandwich
  • Yogurt and Cucumber Soup

Best of the Maldives: Beach Canopy – Club Med Kani

Club Med Kani canopy

When it comes to Club Med Kani, it is not all go, go, go. But even if relaxing on the beach under the shade of a palm tree is your thing, then Kani does that ‘big’ too.

Palm vistas surround the island, but beach side is the most dramatic and about a half kilometre in length. Facing out onto the lagoon, they were planted years ago in striking, neat rows by the previous resident. Forget the thatches umbrellas peppering most resort beaches, this boulevard of palm provides the living, natural, towering shade for as far as the eye can see.

Maldives Tour 2011 – Day 12: Club Med Kani

Club Med Kani Abdul Samad Ibrahim

Welcome by Abdul Samad Ibrahim to Club Med Kani

Activity Central, Maldives.

Many resorts seem to tick the box by offering a night time DJ, local band, traditional dancing or the like. It always seems a bit depressing when so many times these events are so sparsely attended. At Club Med Kani, these events are always hopping with enthusiastic and ‘join in the fun’ audiences.

And it’s not just night time that people get bopping. When I arrived at lunchtime, the water aerobics was just beginning. Perky announcements were blaring from the loud speakers around the common areas repeated in half a dozen languages. Then a hard driving club beat came over the sound system and no less than 30 people aged 5 to 75 jumped in the pool and started moshing to the instructions of a couple of fit youngsters.

The energy is pulsating constantly. No fear of boredom here. Lots of laughter and chatter everywhere I went. “Friendly and convivial” is how the resort was described by Chief of Village, Ryan Leach.

Club Med Kani is not for lovers of quiet unless you sequester yourself on the premium side of the island. Like Kuredu and Meeru, Club Med Kani has segregated a part of the island for a more premium product. It is not officially classified as ‘5 star’, but all of the design criteria are 5-star quality. The trademark boisterousness is kept to a minimum down that end, it seems.

High octane fun.
