Leap day today! Yes, that kind of leap. What is it about the Maldives that has everyone jumping for joy?…
London Fashion Week just finished and now London Fashion Weekend is upon us. But in the Maldives, a week isn’t enough to pack in all the fashion on display. In fact, it takes an extra bonus (leap) day to feature the chic styles and colourful couture. While most famous for its head-turning swimwear in this sun drenched paradise, its elegant clientele sport a striking wardrobe of more conventional wear.
As it happens, one of the world’s fashion and style icons who is rarely seen missing from a runway front row seat, Paris Hilton, has chosen the Maldives to spend her own Fashion Week right now. Her Instagram in recent days is its own spring collection with a digital stage of tropical paradise. Of the over 500 models, performers, celebrities and bloggers in the Maldives Complete Lifestyle database, Paris sets new high watermarks for her social media profile among Maldives visitors. She has a table topping 13.6 million Twitter followers (besting the previous topper from last week’s Sport Illustrated Swimsuit fame, Tyra Banks who has 12.9 million). But Paris’ glitterati credentials are extend across all media. Her stats on Wikipedia, Facebook and Instagram are all in the top 10 of the Maldives Complete database. Among Maldives glitterati, only Jacqueline Fernandez is in the top 10 of both Facebook and Twitter.
Pictured above, she is as comfortable and stylish on the Velaa boardwalk as she is on the cat walk. In fact, Velaa stands out at the show to be at and be seen at with 4 fashion guests making the collection.
China features the most prominently in the list with 4 models, but the fancy frock show is also where the local Maldivians stand out with 3 of their own hometown heroines showcased.
And so in honour of this very fashionable leap month, Maldives Complete presents a different designer display for each day…
While While the Maldives might have competition for being the top photoshoot destination in the world, there is definitely one top photoshoot in the world…the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. The 2016 issue which hit the stands yesterday now so hotly anticipated that they have developed a television show to launch it. Famous SI Swimsuit models include Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Elle MacPherson, Kathy Ireland, Paulina Porizkova, Anna Kournikova, Kate Upton and Beyonce.
And two of the most famous today – partly for their own reality TV shows – shot their issues in the Maldives. Tyra Banks was on the ascendency to becoming her “Americ’a Top Model” with the 1998 edition shot at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru. Her previous year’s cover was historic as she was the first black American to grace the cover of the blockbuster annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. That year also introduced “America’s Got Talent” Heidi Klum as 1998’s cover girl.
While the USA Swimsuit Edition is the main event, SI South Africa has also been drawn to these neighbouring picturesque Laccadive shores. SI South Africa produced a swimsuit calendar featuring Joelle Kayembe at Bandos, as well as Lee Ann Liebenberg and Liza Botha back at Anantara.
Here are 10 true “10s” from the SI Swimsuit collection…
And if the pin-ups are not enough, Sports Illustrated has kindly posted a whole collection of videos taken from the shoots so you can enjoy the backdrop of the Maldives with this assortment of aesthetic additions.
Happy Australia Day, mates! There seems to be a rash of “National Days” in the Indian Ocean this particular week (India National Day is also today). So, a chance to celebrate the Australians who have flocked to the Maldives. You would think that Australia would have enough sunshine, but even the Diggers dig this paradise.
Australia is especially prominent country in the #Maldives digiverse. While it ranks only 14th in terms of visitor numbers, but when it comes to the Maldives Complete social media database (models, athletes, celebrities, bloggers), it’s chockers with Wallabies coming in 4th (behind Russia, UK and US). What’s not surprising is that the Aussie-pedigreed resort, Amilla Fushi, is the most popular down under – 3 of the highest 7 ranked Australian digi-personalities visited there. Mind you, the two countries do share a fair bit in common – extreme island nations (one the world’s largest and the other the world’s smallest islands), big surf culture (3 of those featured are surfers), and the biggest coral reef system in the world. Not to mention the ubiquitous sunshine and effervescent demeanour of the people.
May your national day be as ripper as the togs you snap.

The Golden Globes tonight celebrate acting across both movie and TV. Super Bowl winners might go to Disneyland, but the golden girls of the screen – silver and tube – definitely head to the Maldives as one of their top destinations.
A top UK glitterati hang-out (9 of the top 30 celebrity actress visitors), the Maldives also attracts from as far away as Hollywood right up its own backyard of Bollywood. In fact, 5 of the top 8 actresses including the top 2 spots hail from just across the Laccadive Sea.
And where is the “Chateau” of the Maldives resorts? – Four Seasons Kuda Huraa with 4 entries in the top 30.

Under the Maldives waters, you can spot all manner of beautiful creatures. And I’m not just talking about the fish and animals. We are now half way through the “12 Days of Christmas” (the twelve day period between Christmas and Epiphany on 6th January). The song which immortalised it gave away “6 Swans a Swimming” followed by “8 Maids a Milking”. This collection is more like “14 Mermaids Swimming”…

Here come the girls. Fighting for their own sparkling glass (well, rhinestone) tiara. The Miss Universe Pageant tonight will bring together the some of the most dazzling women on the planet (though I think other planets in the Universe have neglected to send entries again this year). It’s no surprise that one of the most dazzling places on planet Earth, is such a draw to the pageant beauties. A backdrop befitting their admired backsides (and all their other parts).
The tough question is how does a judge begin to discriminate between diverse and stunning beauties? It is a question I’ve had to ask myself in terms of filtering the top beauties to include in the Maldives Complete “Beauty Base”. Literally thousands of the bright and beautiful are drawn to Maldivian shores every day. And in the Instagram age, most of them are sharing their most photogenic snaps. So, I’m using a rough methodology to filter the top ones for inclusion…
A number of pageants have held their photoshoots in the Maldives (eg. Miss France). By far the biggest example, is Miss World 2000 which hosted in a variety of Maldives resorts for swimsuit shoots and is responsible for 9 of the top 20 beauty queens on the list (see ranking table below) is topped by Miss World herself, Priyanka Chopra…

Athif Raudha is literally the face of the Maldives. She displays the classic sun-kissed, delicate features of the Maldivians, except for one extremely striking exception. While most Maldivians have dark brown eyes, hers are an iridescent blue more like the cerulean sea that surrounds the country. Even her Facebook handle is “Wild Blue Lustre”
Her captivating look has drawn her into modelling for a number of years now including Coco Bodu Hithi’s recent campaign (see above). She is also a favourite subject of artistic fashion photographer Alexey Vladimir (in fact, her red hooded portrait featured in yesterdays Christmas Red post is Alexey’s Facebook Profile picture).
Raudha agreed to do a first-ever, exclusive interview with Maldives Complete to share some insights into this intriguing poster child for Maldivian beauty (thanks Paola)…
It was always a hobby, because I grew up posing for pictures. But it wasn’t until I did a few shoots with Sotti (a professional photographer) that things really kicked off. I started getting offers for ads, and I always had people advise me not to take any of them until something good came up. And that worked out quite well.
If I remember correctly, it was something like a PSA, for national TV, encouraging people to stop using plastic bags, and choose eco-friendly stuff. I was 14 years old, and quite the environmentalist, so, naturally very happy to be a part of it.
I don’t. Anyone’s free to contact me directly, regarding any business.
My paternal grandfather, his eyes were a sort of dark hazel. And my beautiful great grandmother had a greyish blue.
Contrary to popular belief, modelling isn’t all I want to do with my life. I’d like to work as a doctor, in many places all over the world. I’m leaving to Bangladesh to study for a Bachelor s of Medicine next month. And that, becoming a doctor, has been my dream, and primary interest, since I was 5, maybe.
I can’t possibly name just one. Adriana Lima, Cara Delevingne, Angelina Jolie. And I can never leave out Deepika Padukone. These women are beautiful, inspiring, and I love them for the things they stand for.
That would definitely be working for Sotti in his “Maldives” series.
A collaboration shoot with Alexey Vladimir, where I got the chance to entertain my inner daredevil. I had to make my way to the middle of the reef. Beyond an area called Usfasgandu in Male’ where there’s a destroyed, unused platform-like bit covered with seaweedy things. Between land and the platform, we had steep, slippery tetrahedral rocks to climb down, then the reef, with more rocks and sharp corals. Strong waves too, because it was a rainy day. Had I slipped or fallen over, or lost my balance with an incoming or outgoing wave, my face would be in coral hell. And then I didn’t fall. And it was all done with me in a full length dress. I LOVED it. The result was a beautiful picture titled “The Night”. Everyone lived happily ever after.
Well, before a shoot, there’s almost always pressure. A weird, unspecific kind. Ha ha. I suppose it’s natural, wanting to do well, feeling nervous for how it’s going to turn out. But once it starts, it’s always fun and an amazing experience. I’ve been lucky to work with great people.
I think the only thing would be, when people fail to communicate very well. Maybe my friends think otherwise, and I don’t express this very often. But, I actually have very little tolerance for rude or bossy people.
Modelling IS a pastime for me! Ha ha. Okay seriously though? I have phases. All in all, I love learning new things. And a lot of that happened while I worked at the military hospital and then IGMH, for a year and a half.
Besides that, I’ve also had my time with yoga, painting, dancing. At school in India, I played the congas – that was fun. And also failed quite terribly at singing. When I want to laze around, there’s always a good book to get lost in. Most recently, I’ve taken up open water diving and trying to play the piano. New things are excitingly endless, you know.
12 Days till Christmas and the holiday festivities are getting into full swing with mistletoe hanging and egg nog flowing. Time to bust out the yuletide garments for the Christmas lunches and yuletide parties. No chance of a Christmas jumper in the toasty Maldives so anything red will do. If you are looking for some fashion inspiration, I’ve assembled 12 Maldivista beauties with some style possibilities for you…

Four years ago this week, Murad Osmann started taking pictures of his girlfriend Nataly during their world travels. His vividly saturated colours and her now iconic posterior posts have been become the subjects of hundreds of stunning photos. The pose is now nearly as standard fare as the “Duck Lip” grimace or the “Shaka” hand sign. The Osmann couple included the Maldives in their worldwide itinerary with some dazzling shots shared of their honeymoon there
As I was researching beauties in the Maldives, I found that this “Rear View” pose was the most popular of the fashion/beauty poses (followed closed by the “Shallow Wallow”). In addition to the Osmann’s who started it all, Nikki Phillips’ Instagram get the award for most (and arguably some of the best).
Here are 37 of the most head turning bevy of beautiful backsides…
